Great Britain. Proof copper Halfpenny, 1839. Victoria Young Head. S-3949. Bronzed. Medal-die alignment. The famous blundered die with oversized "ghosts" of digits "43" beneath the last two digits, "39." Evidently restrikes of these were made, and here is proof: an 1843 die was altered back to 1839. Pleasant enough. Dark brown. NGC graded Proof 64 Brown.

Lot 3032
Great Britain. Proof copper Halfpenny, 1853. Victoria Young Head. S-3949. Recut date. Medal-die alignment. Another piece called "BN" but it's about as "brown" as the sun in late afternoon! "Grades" like this make you wonder just exactly who is looking at these coins, for this coin is dazzling, simply "alive" with brilliant mauve and iridescent blue toning, which gleams and screams "Buy Me!" In other words, this is a Superb Proof with its mint-fire subdued in the most alluring way possible. The cataloguer has never seen a finer nor a prettier example of this Proof halfpenny, which surely rates among the very finest of the relatively few known. Maybe Queen Victoria herself saved this little darling! NGC graded Proof 65 Brown.

Lot 3033
Great Britain. Proof copper Halfpenny, 1853. Victoria Young Head. S-3949. Recut date. Medal-die alignment. Quite rare, from one of the few special Proof Sets made in this year, official reason never given. Sets are known in heart-shaped velvet-lined maroon boxes, suggesting that Victoria commissioned these for some personal reason. Very few were struck, but it's also obvious that restrikes were minted, probably within a year or two, as more than a few singles exist. Intact sets are prohibitively rare, however. This halfpenny is very lovely with delightful surfaces showing light iridescent blue toning on top of light-brown copper. NGC graded Proof 64 Brown.

Lot 3055
Great Britain. Proof copper Farthing, 1860. Victoria Young Head. S-3950, super-rare final year of issue for the type (Proof not listed). While an 1864 is also listed by Spink (which must exist only because of the 1864-dated Manx Proof farthing made at the same time), this cataloguer has never seen either 1864 and has seen only four Proofs of 1860, over many years. Peck cites only examples in the Royal Mint collection. Cope & Rayner (English Milled Coinage, 1973) give this date their highest R7 rating overall and call the Proof unique. However, the cataloguer recalls seeing three or four, two of them in one year, all different. The consignor believes that possibly 6 pieces exist in all, 3 currency issues and 3 Proofs. This is one of them. And, it's a beauty, a very choice example with gleaming mirror fields that are a rich medium brown in color, with bluish iridescence. The Proof strike is 100% sharp, in all details, producing a dramatic Britannia motif along with an elegant portrait of Queen Victoria as a young lady. The sole detractions are extremely faint hairlines, and a slight discoloration in the reverse field. The obverse is simply gorgeous! Ranks at the top of the few pieces known. This is a mega-rare work of numismatic art sculpted in copper, a truly elegant memento of its age! NGC graded Proof 64 Brown.

Lot 3058
Great Britain. Pattern silver Penny, 1860. Victoria. Peck-2111 (called "very rare"). Designed by Joseph Moore of Birmingham; the restrike by Shorthouse showing die-rust (from original dies found in Moore's warehouse in 1886). The story of these exquisite pieces may be found on pages 483-487 of Peck, 2nd edition. Original strikes from 1860, which were an unsuccessful entreaty for the Royal Mint to consider designs for the bronze coinage which was about to commence, are exceedingly rare. Restrikes of 1886 are themselves quite rare, having been struck in various metals in very small numbers. It's a pity the design was not accepted for the new bronzes, as they showed a delightful Laureate Head of Victoria facing left, and on the reverse a seated Britannia looking out "toward the Empire" and garbed in flowing robes, holding trident and shield and other symbolic implements. The accepted designs, now classics in the Penny series, are no more deserving of praise as works of art than the Moore patterns, which are important "period pieces." This delightful example is a very choice Proof, and in fact is one of the finest of these to be found. A near-Gem with gorgeous gray toning having iridescent highlights ranging from pale golden hues to flashes of mauve and green. NGC graded Proof 64.
Estimated Value $1,750 - 2,000.

Great Britain. Pattern Silver Penny, 1860. Peck-2121. By Joseph Moore. The obverse design is similar to that of the previous coin, but the reverse is quite different with Britannia facing right, ONE PENNY above, in a broad raised rim. A very small number of pattern or prototype pennies by Moore struck in silver are still to be found, this a pretty coin. Beautifully toned. Conservatively graded Proof 63. Rare. NGC graded Proof 63.

Great Britain. Penny, 1864. Victoria. Bun Head. S.3954; KM-749.2. Fr-48. Crosslet 4 in date; the rarer of the two varieties of this super-rare date, which ties with 1869 as the rarest date bronze penny of Victoria. Carefully graded by NGC, this is an excellent coin which shows just a little real wear, and a very clear date. The dies are heavily clashed, showing ghosts of the other side on each side. All the marks are tiny. The surfaces in fact are especially pleasing for the grade, dark brown in color with hints of luster.
